In 2021, I began my Protest Series following the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and subsequent surge of protests against police brutality and social injustice. With the reversal of Roe v. Wade, I experienced a renewed sense of urgency with the many protests advocating for a woman‚Äôs right to bodily autonomy and choice. The interwoven calligraphic line and optical color in my mixed media ink drawings create an allover abstract pattern, with key elements of the original reference news photo still apparent. I aim to create an illusion of depth and motion that evokes a visceral disorientation. "Untitled 0423" is inspired by a Bans Off Our Bodies protest. This work evolved organically, as does all of my work, and I enjoy how the simplified medium and palette allows my reference drawing depicting the protest signage to be more prominent.
