The Fifth of July, 2020

Oil, magazine pages on linen

48 x 48 inches

The Fifth of July explores movement as both action and residue. Forms and figures shift in and out of depth, caught mid-gesture within a hot summer palette of greens and yellows—a Fourth of July picnic tipping into chaos. Older lines and fragments of newsprint surface as traces of erasure, recording the physical effort of revision rather than hiding it. Hints of figuration emerge within agitated, improvised gestures, embracing complexity, awkwardness, and contingency. The painting acts as a snapshot of memory and aftermath—tinsel in midsummer, glitter days after the party—holding vulnerability and motion when clarity feels just out of reach.
