Protective Underwear Series
The series critiques the harsh reality that women must often live in a state of hyper-vigilance, where even something as personal as underwear must be imagined as protective gear. It confronts issues of gendered violence, survival, resilience, and the absurdity of needing protection in the most intimate spaces. 2018 Mixed Medium Assemblage 5 pieces 14 x 14 , 1 piece 24 x 48 24 0 This work comes from my Protective Underwear series, an ongoing exploration of vulnerability, resilience, and the ways women shield themselves against violence. The intimate form of underwear becomes a site of both exposure and defense—a symbol of the body's fragility but also its capacity for resistance. Each piece is housed within a wire-screened box, recalling cages or barriers, yet adorned with materials such as flowers, fabric, and braids that transform containment into expressions of survival and strength. The red braid, extending beyond its frame, insists on visibility and refusal; it will not remain enclosed. Through these works, I confront the silent burdens women carry and the quiet strategies of protection we develop. By reimagining garments as armor, I seek to honor both the pain and the power embedded in women's lived experiences. It confronts issues of gendered violence, survival, resilience, and the absurdity of needing protection in the most intimate spaces.
