Olivia DiMichele
For No Witness, 2025
Wool and Cotton Yarn, Softwood, Construction Plywood, Bronze, Mild Steel 24x24x24
For no witness explores the tension between the desire to resist gendered expectations, the desire to conform to them and the power that lives deep within the observation and mastery of this dichotomy. The stories we are told about how we act, who we are and who we should be are woven with threads pulling lineage, mythology, personal history and contemporary discourse together. It is within the unravelling and reweaving of these knitted narratives that we see ourselves, not for what we've been told, but for what emerges from the mess, what resonates deep within. DiMichele utilises duplicate stitch, a hand embroidery technique on machine knitted fabric, to collage words and imagery, to tell a story around one of the most influential domestic objects, literally and figuratively, the oven.
