I am drawn to signage as a way to bring the personal into institutional or public spaces. This work is based on a sign I first saw in the bathroom of one of the few Uyghur restaurants in New York City. The Uyghurs, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group from China, face ongoing persecution. I was struck by how this playful, gendered sign reflected cultural approaches to shared spaces, and would chose to present it in the bathroom at Pen & Brush.
