Tine Kindermann 1.Little Immigrant, 2.Vienna, 3.Boy and Dog 2000, 2002, 2004 Sculpey, painted with acrylics 5.5 x 5 x 3.5", 6 x 6 x 5", 8.5 x 5.5 x 4" The small figurines in this group are my interpretation of Hummel figurines, small porcelain collectibles that were very popular in Germany during and after the Nazi era. Based on the drawings of artist Berta Hummel and showing small children imitating grown ups’ activities, these depictions of childhood innocence were internationally exported by Germany, at a time when actual children were killed in concentration camps. This hypocrisy inspired me to create my own version of Hummels, fusing the realities of 1930s German politics with the idealized imagery of small children. It also allowed me to explore the relationship of fascism and kitsch, as well as the by Hannah Arendt so brilliantly recognized banality of evil.
