We are excited to present the official NYC launch of "Black Matrilineage, Photography, and Representation: Another Way of Knowing "

Join us at Pen + Brush on Feb 23rd, 6 pm - 9 pm to celebrate this five-year project with over 40 international contributors that honor Black Motherhood through essays, archival images, poems, and contemporary photography. 

Black Matrilineage, Photography, and Representation: Another Way of Knowing draws on a wide range of scholarly inquiry and contemporary art, specifically photographic representation of Black motherhood, mothering, and mutual care within Black communities. Join us on February 23rd at 6pm to celebrate the launch of this amazing resource and collection at Pen + Brush. 

The essays, and interviews, paired with a curated selection of images, this volume addresses the complicated relationship between Blackness and photography and in particular its gendered dimension, its relationship to health, sexuality, and digital culture. With forty international contributors, this visual exploration of Black motherhood through pictures made by Black woman–identifying photographers serves as a reflection of the past and a portal to the future and contributes to recent scholarship on the complexity of Black life and Black joy.
